My thoughts on the similarities between Metroid Dread and Doom 2016.

After recently switching between Doom 2016 and Metroid Dread on Switch, I can’t help but notice some striking similarities between the two games.

It's rather... Lonely.

Yes, this is a common theme in both but I felt it stronger in Metroid Dread; having to think about using your tools gives the lonely atmosphere better grip than in playing Doom 2016 where you run in guns-a-blazing at the enemies who took over the facility.

The OST in both games are master pieces (even my cat agrees)

Art is subjective but I think we can all agree that both Original Soundtracks for Doom 2016 and Metroid Dread are amazing, even my little orange kitty fell asleep to both soundtracks while I was playing both on my Switch Lite with a Bluetooth speaker for better audio effect. Both have tunes that match their respective atmosphere which by the way, Metroid Dread is beautiful on Switch.

Graphically impressive for the Nintendo Switch

Let's be honest; the Switch and the Switch Lite use the same specs and are low-end gaming devices, the upcoming Switch 2 will probably be just a bit faster and a little more intensive graphically.

Anyways; even while playing on my Switch Lite at 720p with a 5.5 inch display, I'm graphically impressed with how Doom 2016 handles on Switch and I've had some jaw dropping scenery experiences with Metroid Dread, both have yet to stutter on my Switch Lite so optimization on graphics and performance for both Doom 2016 and Metroid Dread are the best examples on Switch.

Gameplay fits both series respectively

Doom 2016 is.. Doom. Even during Doom 3 it was always about just shooting up demons with enough Arsenal to send Lucifer himself screaming. Honestly I think we all know about the blood shed of Doom games and if not; do yourself a favorite and check out Doom 1993, Doom 2 and at least Doom 2016.

Metroid has always had music that fit it's mysterious yet intensive atmosphere; yes the EMMIs can be an annoyance but I enjoy thinking of them as a mini-boss tied to the atmosphere of the game. Each area has its own enemies, elements, atmosphere and some have secrets and upgrades to collect you can come back to later in your ventures.

Controls are smooth and nice

I've played nany games over the years, I've even almost beaten Sonic The Hedgehog 2006 until the last level for the chaos emeralds. Ironically the last PS3 game I played before my PS3 kicked the bucket.

Doom 2016 and Metroid Dread are amazing with controls, both are very responsive and feel very good to control.

Doom 2016 is your usual run and gun shooter, controls feel nice and if you want; you can use motion controls for aiming.

Metroid Dread is more methodic in its movement, some gear will need precise movements to pull off but once pulled off, it feels awesome and very fun once you get the hang of the controls.

My final thoughts

Both are titles in their respective franchises, honestly. Metroid Dread is the first one I’ve picked up in the series, but I do remember playing a Metroid game on a Game Boy Advance from a family member when I was a kid. I also played a bit of the Metroid games for the NES and SNES on Nintendo Online. Aside from a few quirks, Metroid Dread fits perfectly into the older games of being a 2D side-scrolling shooter with exploration and curiosity being everywhere in the map.

Doom 2016 was my first exposure to Doom when I was a teenager and I have loved it since, even the old WAD games got me into tinkering with mods and community made maps. The music is always so great in Doom games, the action is always nonstop and the demon slaying is as peak as it always has been in Doom.
